چکیده
Background: Delirium is a disturbance in attention awareness which develops in short period of time & fluctuate in severity. Its associated with functional disability, cognitive impairment, dementia & death in ICU inpatients. Objective: To Study the incidence & risk factors of delirium in intensive care unit (ICU) patients . Method: In an observational, non-interventional study, 486 ICU patients were assessed in a tertiary care center for delirium. 163 patients had a Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale value (RASS) ≤-3 were excluded from the study. Remaining, 323 subjects were evaluated for delirium using CAM-ICU (Confusion Assessment Method for ICU). Apart from socio-demographic profile, admission details, clinical profiles, use of invasive mechanical ventilation, invasive devices & medication were examined. SPSS version 14.0 was used for statistical analysis. Results: Among 323 subjects evaluated by CAM-ICU, 31 (9.6%) patients had delirium. Medical causes being most common reason for ICU admission & sepsis being the commonest medical ailment. Use of Invasive mechanical ventilation, central vein catheter, arterial catheter, urinary catheter & midazolam use; significantly increased risk of delirium. Prolonged ICU (5 vs 3) and hospital (10 vs 6) length of stay (LOS) was associated with delirium. Conclusion: One in every ten patients admitted to an intensive care unit develop delirium, which is postulated to be associated with poor prognosis, cognitive impairment & mortality risk. Burden of delirium can be reduced by controlling for several modifiable risk factors.

Incidence and risk factors for delirium development in ICU patients - a prospective observational study.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Delirium is an acute brain dysfunction and a frequent complication in critically ill patients. When present it significantly worsens the prognosis of patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of delirium and risk factors for delirium in a mixed group of trauma, medical and surgical ICU patients. METHODS A prospective observational study was conducted in...
متن کاملDELIRIUM PREVALENCE AND RELATED RISK FACTORS IN PATIENTS WITH HEAD AND NECK CANCER SURGERY
Background & Aims: Delirium is a common problem in hospitalized patients and may threaten the patient's life. Patients undergoing surgery may experience such a common complication. The high mortality in patients with delirium and lack of a rapid recovery from the disease, reveal the importance of addressing this problem. So the purpose of this study is to show the risk factors in the major...
متن کاملPredisposing Risk Factors for Delirium in Living Donor Liver Transplantation Patients in Intensive Care Units
BACKGROUND Delirium is one of the main causes of increased length of intensive care unit (ICU) stay among patients who have undergone living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). We aimed to evaluate risk factors for delirium after LDLT as well as to investigate whether delirium impacts the length of ICU and hospital stay. METHODS Seventy-eight patients who underwent LDLT during the period Janu...
متن کاملDelirium after cardiac surgery: incidence and risk factors.
OBJECTIVES Delirium after cardiac surgery is a problem with consequences for patients and healthcare. Preventive strategies from known risk factors may reduce the incidence and severity of delirium. The present aim was to explore risk factors behind delirium in older patients undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. METHODS Patients (≥70 years) scheduled for routine cardiac sur...
متن کاملDevelopment of Delirium in the Intensive Care Unit in Patients after Endovascular Aortic Repair: A Retrospective Evaluation of the Prevalence and Risk Factors
Delirium is an acute form of nervous system dysfunction often observed in patients in the intensive care unit. Endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) is considered a minimally invasive surgical treatment for abdominal aortic aneurysm. Although the operation method is widely used, there are few investigations of the rate and risk factors of delirium development after the operation. In this study, we ...
